Beethoven - The Famous Turkish March

ISTANBUL SYMPHONY by ISTANBUL PHILHARMONIC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL_kD4k-WA4 "The Turkish sound captured the imagination of the Viennese masters, who attempted to re-create it in their orchestral and theatrical works. Haydn wrote three military symphonies, Beethoven composed three orchestral works with Turkish percussion (including his monumental Symphony No. 9, which has a Turkish march in the last movement), and Mozart and Haydn, among others, used this military sound in their operas. The Janissary chorus [from Die Entführung] is all that can be desired, that is, short, lively, and written to please the Viennese. The influence was felt even in piano music—notably in Mozart's appealing Rondo alla turca from his Sonata in A major, which we will hear. So popular was this style that some nineteenth-century pianos featured a "Janissary pedal" to add percussive effects. (...) The fascination with Turkish music affected the makeup of the Western orchestra by establishing percussion instruments of Turkish origin (bass drum, cymbals, bells, triangle) as permanent members of the ensemble. It's hard to imagine an orchestra today without them! The Turkish Janissary ensemble also influenced the military band in the West; these same instruments now form the heart of every marching and concert band. Beethoven was fascinated by another Turkish musical tradition—this one a mystical religious ceremony to which he alluded in his incidental music for the stage work." Duration: 2:19 - FileType: mp3 - Bitrate: 192 Kbps

Ludwig van Beethoven - Turkish March, from "The Ruins of Athens" piano solo version

The Turkish March (Marcia alla turca) is a well-known classical march theme by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was written in the Turkish style popular in music of the time. The theme was first used in Beethoven's "6 Variations on an Original Theme", Op. 76, of 1809. In 1811 Beethoven wrote an overture and incidental music to a play by August von Kotzebue called The Ruins of Athens (Op. 113), which premiered in Pest in 1812. The Turkish March appears as item No. 4 of the incidental music. Many music lovers associate the theme with The Ruins of Athens, although that was not its original appearance. The march is in B flat major, tempo vivace and 2/4 time. Its dynamic scheme is highly suggestive of a procession passing by, starting out pianissimo, poco a poco rising to a fortissimo climax and then receding back to pianissimo by the coda. Anton Rubinstein arranged a popular piano version of the march in B flat major, tempo Allegretto. This version is the one featured in this video. Duration: 2:19 - FileType: mp3 - Bitrate: 192 Kbps

Josef Hofmann plays Beethoven, "Turkish March" on a 1927 Steinway Duo-Art

Pianist Josef Hofmann (1876-1957) was born in Poland and as a child prodigy toured Europe and the United States. By the early 20th century he became one of the premier concert pianists of the day. His performances were noted both for his technical precision and his strength. He recorded for early phonograph as well as for Aeolian Corp. on Duo-Art reproducing piano. This original Duo-Art roll # 6327-8 was recorded in September 1920, and is a short showpiece from Beethoven's "Ruins of Athens", arranged for piano by Anton Rubinstein. The steady introductory crescendo and concluding decrescendo evoke a marching army initially heard from a distance, passing by and fading into the distance. This roll is heard on a 6'6" Steinway model OR Duo-Art reproducing grand in a burl walnut artcase that was restored in early 2012 at Historic Pianos for the instrument's owner near Washington DC. Reproducing pianos like this one retailed in the 1920s for much more than the cost of an average house, and they allowed the wealthy owner in the 1920s to hear high fidelity performances at home in a time before the invention of electronic recording technology or even the radio or loudspeaker. Today, rebuilt instruments like this are remarkably affordable. And the technology provides an interesting window into early 20th century piano performances and playing styles.

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Beethoven - Turkish March from The Ruins of Athens

Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (Russian: Серге́й Васи́льевич Рахма́нинов; Russian pronunciation: [sʲɪrˈɡʲej rɐxˈmanʲɪnəf]; 1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1873 – 28 March 1943), was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of all time and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music. Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a personal style notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness and his use of rich orchestral colours. The piano is featured prominently in Rachmaninoff's compositional output, and through his own skills as a performer he explored the expressive possibilities of the instrument. The Rachmaninoff family, of Russian and distant Moldavian (allegedly from one of Stephen the Great's sons) descent, was part of the Russian aristocracy, having been in the service of the Russian tsars since the 16th century, and had strong musical and military leanings. The composer's father, Vasily Arkadyevich Rachmaninoff (1841–1916), an amateur pianist and army officer, married Lyubov Petrovna Butakova (1853–1929), gained five estates as a dowry, and had three boys and three girls. Sergei was born on 1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1873 at the estate of Semyonovo, in Oneg, near Great Novgorod in north-westernRussia... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Rachmaninoff A link to this wonderful artists personal website: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/sergey-rachmaninov-mn0000505265/discography Please Enjoy! The Turkish March appears as item No. 4 of the incidental music. Many music lovers associate the theme with The Ruins of Athens, although that was not its original appearance. I orchestrated this in a 70s synth-pop style, reminiscent to some of Wendy Carlos' "tongue-in-cheek" tracks from her "By Request" album (1975).
