    Rolling Stones-Gimme Shelter at Altamont

The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was an infamous rock concert held on Saturday, December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway in northern California, between Tracy and Livermore. Headlined and organized by The Rolling Stones, it also featured, in order of appearance: Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Crosby, Stills & Nash, with the Rolling Stones taking the stage as the final act. The Grateful Dead were also scheduled to perform, but declined to play shortly before their scheduled appearance due to the increasing violence at the venue. That's the way things went at Altamont so badly that the Grateful Dead, prime organizers and movers of the festival, didn't even get to play. Approximately 300,000 people attended the concert, and some anticipated that it would be a "Woodstock West." The event is best known for having been marred by considerable violence, including one homicide and three accidental deaths: two caused by a hit-and-run car accident and one by drowning in an irrigation canal. Four births were reported during the event as well.Lead singer Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones (who had already been punched by a concertgoer within seconds of emerging from his helicopter)was visibly intimidated by the unruly situation, urging everyone to "Just be cool down in the front there, don't push around." Within a minute of starting their third song, "Sympathy for the Devil", a fight erupted in the front of the crowd, at the foot of the stage. After a lengthy pause and another appeal for calm, the band restarted "Sympathy" and continued their set with less incident until the start of "Under My Thumb". Some of the Hell's Angels got into a scuffle with 18-year-old Meredith Hunter when he attempted to get onstage with other fans. One of the Hell's Angels grabbed Hunter's head, punched him, and chased him back into the crowd. At that point Hunter returned to the stage where, according to Gimme Shelter producer Porter Bibb, Hunter's girlfriend Patty Bredahoff found him and tearfully begged him to calm down and move further back in the crowd with her, but he was reportedly enraged, irrational and so high he could barely walk."Footage from the documentary shows Hunter (seen in the film in a bright lime-green suit) drawing a long-barreled revolver from his jacket, and Hells Angel Alan Passaro, armed with a knife, running at Hunter from the side, parrying the gun with his left hand and stabbing him with his right. In the film, Passaro is seen delivering only two stabs, but he is reported to have stabbed Hunter five times Hunter's autopsy confirmed he was high on methamphetamine when he died.Passaro was arrested and tried for murder in the summer of 1971, but was acquitted after a jury viewed concert footage showing Hunter brandishing the revolver and concluded that Passaro had acted in self-defense. The Rolling Stones were unaware of the killing, and completed the remaining eight songs of their set without further significant incident. On May 25, 2005, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office announced that it was officially closing the stabbing case. Investigators, concluding a renewed two-year investigation, dismissed the theory of a second Hells Angel taking part in the stabbing. The Altamont concert is often contrasted with the Woodstock festival that took place less than four months earlier. While Woodstock represented "peace and love", Altamont came to be viewed as the end of the hippie era and the de facto conclusion of late-1960s American youth culture: "Altamont became, whether fairly or not, a symbol for the death of the Woodstock Nation."In 2008 a former FBI agent asserted that some members of the Hell's Angels had conspired to murder Mick Jagger in retribution for The Rolling Stones' lack of support following the concert. The conspirators reportedly used a boat to approach a residence where Jagger was staying on Long Island, New York; the plot failed when the boat was nearly sunk by a storm. Jagger's spokesperson has refused to comment on the matter.Due to the rumored bounty from the Hells Angels to have Jagger assassinated, Keith Richards carried a .38 caliber revolver during the next American tour in 1972.

Clayton sang with such emotional force that her voice cracked. (“I was just grateful that the crack was in tune,” said Merry. You can hear the others in the studio shouting in amazement. Despite giving what would become the most famous performance of her career, it turned out to be a tragic night for Clayton. Shortly after leaving the studio, she lost her baby in a miscarriage.

THE ROLLING STONES - GIMME SHELTER 1970 PARTE 7

Merry Clayton – 1970 – Gimme Shelter 05 Gimmie Shelter Merry Clayton – 1970 – Gimme Shelter Merry Clayton Gimme Shelter front In order to understand the genuine class act you’re dealing with here – a potted-history of Merry Clayton’s past vocal glories will set the scene. She contributed to Neil Young‘s “The Old Laughing Lady” and “I’ve Loved Her So Long” on his self-titled debut album in 1968, sings on Joe Cocker‘s “Feelin’ Alright” from his “With A Little Help From My Friends” debut album from 1969 and is on Allen Toussaint‘s magical “From A Whisper To A Scream” (1970). Just as impressively Merry sings on “Way Over Yonder”, “Where You Lead” and “Smackwater Jack” on Carole King‘s magisterial “Tapestry” album (1971). Then there are sessions for B.B. King, Jesse Davis, Neil Diamond, Charles Wright, Jimmy Witherspoon, Billy Preston, Lee Michaels, Linda Ronstadt, Leon Russell, Ruth Copeland, Chi Coltrane, David T. Walker, Etta James, Rare Earth, The Who and even Ringo Starr. But her most famous outing has to be her duet vocals with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter” – one of the standout album tracks from “Let It Bleed” – the Rolling Stones masterpiece from 1969 (it was the first album produced by Jimmy Miller who suggested Merry for the vocals). She even turns up on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” in 1974 and “Cornflake Girl” by Tori Amos in 1994… So it’s hardly surprising that she signed to Lou Adler’s Ode Records in the late Sixties and quickly pushed out two solo albums – “Merry Clayton” from 1971 – and this – “Gimme Shelter” – her debut from 1970.

THE ROLLING STONES - Gimme Shelter Pop Go Sixties, 1969 - edit Stereo/HD

THE ROLLING STONES "Gimme Shelter" Album: Let It Bleed Released: 5 December, 1969 Label: Decca Records/ABKCO "Gimme Shelter" first appeared as the opening track on the Rolling Stones' 1969 album Let It Bleed. Although the first word was spelled "Gimmie" on that album, subsequent recordings by the band and other musicians have made "Gimme" the customary spelling. The recording features Richards playing in his new open tuning on electric guitar. The recording also features vocals by Merry Clayton, recorded at a last-minute late-night recording session during the mixing phase, arranged by her friend and record producer Jack Nitzsche. The Rolling Stones first played the song live on the TV special, 'Pop Go The Sixties', on 31 December 1969. 'Gimme Shelter' was never released as a single however; it quickly became a staple of their live show, first performed during their 1969 American Tour. It has since been included on many compilation releases, including both 'Hot Rocks' 1964--1971 and Forty Licks, and concert versions appear on the Rolling Stones' albums 'No Security' and 'Live Licks'. The song also appears on the 2008 Official Video release of the 1972 Rolling Stones tour, 'Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones'. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Gimme Shelter" was created from the combined efforts of the singer and the guitarist. Richards had been working on the song's signature opening in London while Jagger was working on the film Performance. The song is a churning mid-tempo rocker and begins with a rhythm guitar intro by Richards, followed by Jagger's lead vocal. On the recording of the album, Jagger said in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone, "Well, it was a very rough, very violent era! The Vietnam War! Violence on the screens, pillage and burning and Vietnam was not war as we knew it in the conventional sense..." On the song itself, he concluded, "That's a kind of end-of-the-world song, really. It's apocalypse; the whole record's like that." The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter Live in Oakland, California - 1969 Bootleg Radio

The Rolling Stones – Live: Oakland, California (1969) – Bootleg Radio (HQ). Date: November 9, 1969 (second show). Venue: The Coliseum, Oakland CA. - Sympathy For The Devil; - Stray Cat Blues; - Prodigal Son; - You Gotta Move; - Love In Vain; - Live With Me; - Gimme Shelter; - Little Queenie; - Satisfaction. • Mick Jagger – lead vocals; • Keith Richards – rhythm guitar, backing vocals; • Mick Taylor – lead guitar; • Bill Wyman – bass guitar; • Charlie Watts – drums The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The original line-up consisted of Brian Jones (rhythm guitar, harmonica), Mick Jagger (lead vocals), Keith Richards (lead guitar, backing vocals), Bill Wyman (bass), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ian Stewart (piano). Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued as a touring member until his death in 1985. Jones left the band less than a month prior to his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who remained until 1974. After Taylor left the band, Ronnie Wood took his place in 1975 and has been on guitar in tandem with Richards ever since. Following Wyman's departure in 1993, Darryl Jones joined as their touring bassist. Other touring keyboardists for the band have been Nicky Hopkins (1967–82), Billy Preston (through the mid-1970s) and Chuck Leavell (1982-present). The band was first led by Jones, but after teaming as the band's songwriters, Jagger and Richards assumed leadership while Jones dealt with legal and personal troubles. The Rolling Stones were at the forefront of the British Invasion of bands that became popular in the US in 1964, and identified with the youthful and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s. Rooted in blues and early rock and roll, the group began a short period of musical experimentation in the mid-1960s that peaked with the psychedelic album Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967). Subsequently, the group returned to its "bluesy" roots with Beggars Banquet (1968) which along with its follow-ups Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971) and Exile on Main St. (1972) is generally considered to be the band's best work and is seen as their "Golden Age". During this period, they were first introduced on stage as "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band". Musicologist Robert Palmer attributed the "remarkable endurance" of the Rolling Stones to being "rooted in traditional verities, in rhythm-and-blues and soul music", while "more ephemeral pop fashions have come and gone". The band continued to release commercially successful records in the 1970s and sold many albums, including Some Girls (1978) and Tattoo You (1981), which were their most popular albums worldwide. From 1983 to 1987, tensions between Jagger and Richards almost caused the band to split. However, they managed to patch up their friendship in 1987. They separated temporarily to work on solo projects and experienced a comeback with Steel Wheels (1989), which was followed by a large stadium and arena tour. Since the 1990s, new recorded material from the group has been less well-received and less frequent. Despite this, the Rolling Stones have continued to be a huge attraction on the live circuit, with stadium tours in the 1990s and 2000s. By 2007, the band had four of the top five highest-grossing concert tours of all time: Voodoo Lounge Tour (1994–95), Bridges to Babylon Tour (1997–98), Licks Tour (2002–03) and A Bigger Bang Tour (2005–07). The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them fourth on the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list and their estimated album sales are above 250 million. They have released 30 studio albums, 18 live albums and numerous compilations. Let It Bleed (1969) was their first of five consecutive No. 1 studio and live albums in the UK. Sticky Fingers (1971) was the first of eight consecutive No. 1 studio albums in the US. In 2008, the band ranked 10th on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists chart. In 2012, the band celebrated its 50th anniversary. Enjoy the music and feel free to Subscribe!
