Lissie "When I'm Alone" Live - Sideshow Alley

Lissie performs "When I'm Alone" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.lissie.com ABOUT THE EPISODE While in Australia for the first time supporting Washington and playing a number of her own shows, we meet up with a relaxed Lissie on a quiet autumn day for a lunchtime session in South Melbourne. We first came across the Illinois native watching her duet with Ellie Goulding at the UK Great Escape Festival. Those familiar with her music will have no doubt watched through an array of her brilliant live performances, including covers of Metallica and Lady Gaga. One of our favourites being her track 'Everywhere I Go' shot by the good folks at Watch Listen Tell. It was a pleasure to gather in one of the oldest suburbs in Melbourne, conveniently lined with endless cobbled alleys. Watching an artist truly let loose in a song is what gets us excited, and we weren't disappointed. With a natural gutsy voice and powerful energy, Lissie and her band conquered the shoot with her single "When I'm Alone". From the first note of the electric guitar strum, the solid slap of the cajón box and the rockin' grooves of the head pumping bassist, our sound engineer Selwyn Cozens had some sublime notes to play with in the mix. With many of our crew venturing out from their 9-5, this sure wasn't a bad way to spend a lunch hour. In the charming setting of Foundry Site Park, it was an added bonus to hear the birds chime in on cue at the end of the song. The Nymphs "It's Been A Long Time Awaiting" Live - Sideshow Alley

The Nymphs perform "It's Been A Long Time Awaiting" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.hellonymphs.com ABOUT THE EPISODE Brassy, swinging sass to the power of four; ladies and gentlemen we proudly present to you The Nymphs! Battling the Melbourne wind and the rolling sounds of the nearby Collins Street tram, our crew wrangled together on George Parade in front of iconic Melbourne restaurant, Kitchen Cat. Joining us -- during a brief visit to Australia -- was international director and cinematographer Philip Bloom. Also appearing as a cameo crewmember was comedian Lawrence Leung, who lent some support with camera in hand. We first caught sight of The Nymphs in 2010, ripping through an a cappella version of Metallica's Enter Sandman on ABC program 'Spicks and Specks'. These Melbourne girls evoke an era of times less complicated, while bringing a more contemporary blend to the nostalgic a cappella sound. Through various introductions, we became well acquainted with their addictive blend of soulful harmonies and WWII-era ditties. With 50s style dresses blowing in the breeze and four part harmonies a blazing, the ladies performed an unreleased track "It's Been A Long Time Awaiting". Those familiar with our episode of 'The Tiger and Me' will recognise Jane Hendry, who doubles her duties across both bands. Completing the quartet are Clare Hendry, Kel Day and Bek Chapman. The girls have been kicking their matching heels into the hearts of audiences across the country, including a recent string of dates travelling with the RockWiz Orkestra. It might have been a long time awaiting, but we've got them at last... ABOUT THE BAND Forged in the swelter of Melbourne's eclectic live music scene in 2005, The Nymphs' addictive blend of big band bombast, WWII-era ditties, soulful harmony and beguiling sense for the theatrical have seen them kick their matching heels into the hearts of audiences around the country. With a timeless repertoire of their inimitably catchy original tunes as well as a handpicked selection of reinvigorated classics, The Nymphs (Bek Chapman, Jane Hendry, Kel Day and Clare Hendry) have added their own unique flair to a genre far too long ignored by the hoi polloi. With four part harmonies a blazing, The Nymphs' vocal arrangements dish up a unique treat for today's music lovers. Equally adept at wringing tears from your eyes or laughs from your cockles, The Nymphs' set list is a bejewelled bevy of sparkling gems. From the silly and sassy, to the sensitive and sorrowful, The Nymphs can cut like knives or soothe like a mamma's touch with equal delicacy and finesse, all while keeping their pleats impeccably pressed. Julia Jacklin "Eastwick" Live - Sideshow Alley

Julia Jacklin performs "Eastwick" live for Sideshow Alley. http://alley.tv http://www.juliajacklin.com ABOUT THE EPISODE Here at Sideshow Alley, we’re a band of filmmakers. A ragtag team of dreamers and creatives, coming together to make something beautiful. We love honesty. We’re drawn to the obscure. And we love capturing music and subsequently, musicians in a raw state. There’s no payroll keeping us here. There’s no boss telling us what to do. There’s certainly no client to phone in at zero hour to tell us they don’t like the birds who happened to chime in during a given take. And if we’re being really honest here: we wouldn’t have it any other way. A project outside the 9 to 5, purely fueled by passion and the desire to create something, well, beautiful. So, as we kick off our long awaited Season 6, it’s beyond fitting we do so with a musician who’s no stranger to burning the midnight oil herself: a self-starter and self-proclaimed busy body, Julia Jacklin. Mumford & Sons "Timshel" Live - Sideshow Alley

Mumford & Sons perform "Timshel" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THE EPISODE It's a bonafide Melbournism. A standing room only bar tucked away off Little Collins St where you'll find a dapper mixologist concocting delicious cocktails and serious espressos. Outside of Bar Americano we're preparing for another episode with our visiting UK friends, Mumford & Sons. These days you're more likely to find these 4 amicable lads performing at arenas and stadium venues. Although their brand of Appalachian folk is very much at home in an intimate setting. Since becoming friends with Mr Lovett through our work on episode #27 with The Staves, we invited the band to drop by a laneway when they passed through Melbourne in support of their latest album Babel. As the crew checked levels and focus with an increasingly growing amount of camera and sound equipment, the atmosphere was relaxed, birds chirping (as usual) and plenty of ridiculous banter from these brothers of the road, Ted, Winston, Marcus and Ben. Performing Timshel off their first album Sigh No More, this well documented John Steinbeck influenced song provides are fitting mantra for our humble little project. You can't plan it or predict what will happen, but you can choose to make your own path. First Aid Kit perform "Waltz for Richard" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://thisisfirstaidkit.com ABOUT THE EPISODE First Aid Kit have some wonderful live performances out there on the internet. So we were very excited to see what they'd do for us. Their simple guitar sound and stunning harmonies would bounce off those cobblestones like nothing else. As we were preparing for the shoot, hoping the rain wouldn't get any heavier, we noticed a horse and cart go by. Hmmmm.... What a great way to pick up the band. Ty chased the cabby and brokered a stellar deal for the one block of transport we needed. We always travel like this of course. By the time we'd finished sound check we knew it was going to be a special episode. Those voices. Wow. And a little crowd had already gathered behind the cameras, which always adds a welcome pressure and buzz. Roll cameras. Action. Such beautiful sound and pictures. Wait. No. It's really starting to rain. Damn, that's a great idea Melany. Yeah, give her the umbrella, ask her mum if its ok. I hope this works out. It did. It really really did. ABOUT FIRST AID KIT Prodigious Swedish teenagers Klara (17) and Johanna Söderberg (19), AKA First Aid Kit, have been gathering fans apace since the release of their 'Drunken Trees' EP in February 2009. Kimbra Featuring Sam Lawrence "Wandering Limbs" Live - Sideshow Alley

Kimbra performs "Wandering Limbs" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv From the album VOWS, in stores and online now: http://bit.ly/qD565K http://www.kimbramusic.com ABOUT THE EPISODE "I'm going to dangle my feet over the wire", croons Kimbra on the opening line of Wandering Limbs. It's a position in which she seems perfectly comfortable, walking the wire she's stretched between jazz influences and an eccentrically dark take on pop song-writing. "If you like Nina Simone, Florence & The Machine, and/or Bjork, then we think you will enjoy Kimbra — her music reminds us of all those fierce ladies!" wrote Perez Hilton after seeing the video for her single "Settle Down". Stripped of the pop production so heavy in her released tracks, we were excited to hear Kimbra exposed only to the acoustic echoes of the lane we'd chosen. With dueling vocalist and keys player Sam Lawrence in tow, we met up with stylishly attired Kimbra in an alley behind the Workers Club in Fitzroy. The lovely folks at the Workers opened up their laneway entrance to supply power to Sam's keyboard. Posed between the pub and the parked cars, the two delighted us with possibly one of our favourite sessions to date, a fortunate combination of an elegantly executed song with environmental blessings such as perfectly timed gusts of wind. We were even lucky to have a coy father-of-the-crew who unwittingly arranged himself centre shot, supplying a new meaning to the song's recurring line, "am I caught in the background or part of the scene?" The Staves "Icarus" Live - Sideshow Alley

The Staves perform "Icarus" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE A cinematic rooftop location in New York with the Empire State building in the distance. In company with Ben Lovett , Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bear's Den and an amazing cast of new friends, we're set to record our next episode with three beautiful English sisters, The Staves. Earlier this year the Sideshow Alley team descended on Austin, Texas for SXSW. While in town we met up with the great folks at Communion Records. They were about to begin an historic tour promoting the aforementioned bands across the USA travelling from Austin to Boston in 6 VW kombis. Ty was lucky enough to join them on the road across 11 cities assisting director James Marcus Haney in filming a documentary of the tour. When the kombis pulled into New York City for a sell out show at the Mercury Lounge, we used an opportune time following sound-check to round up the rest of the SSA NYC team and scale the nearest rooftop off the Bowery (thanks to producer Matthew Makar for the location). The wind had a certain bite to it which keep everyone bouncing. But was no time for messing about. We firstly recorded a good-for-the-soul performance with Nathaniel Rateliff (stay tuned), then decorated the rooftop with string of Christmas lights for our session with The Staves. With Ben Howard graciously on the duties of senior slate - and the travelling Communion clan in the wings - the three siblings Emily, Jessica & Camilla showcased their crystalline harmonies. Set against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, the girls also provided plenty of wit and outtakes we just couldn't squeeze into this introduction. Having recently supported Bon Iver throughout the USA and Europe, their fantastic new Glyn and Ethan Johns produced album "Dead & Born and Grown" is out now (and incidentally features photos from SSA crew members Ty Johnson and Kelly Teacher). Make sure you grab a copy. Communion monthly music club nights are held in both New York and Melbourne. With more new talent to be discovered, be sure to get along and support this fantastic community. Laura Marling "Don't Ask Me Why / Salinas" Live - Sideshow Alley

Laura Marling performs "Don't Ask Me Why / Salinas" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE When it was announced earlier this year Laura Marling would be playing at the Forum Theatre in support of her third album "A Creature I Don't Know", the opportunity to juxtapose this much loved english folk singer with the grit and rawness of an iconic Melbourne lane way was something we were suitably excited about. Home to both a top end spanish restaurant and health centre for the homeless, Hosier lane is arguably Melbourne's most famous lane way. Once adorned with a Bansky rat, this iconic bluestone lane is an ever changing gallery of sophisticated street art. Being hospitable tour guides, we met Laura at the Forum stage door; just a short walk through the lane way to our shoot location. "With a mind so dark and skin so white" as she proclaims on album track "All My Rage", this dusky voiced ghostly songstress is well known for the lyrical wisdom beyond her years. Since releasing two Mercury Prize nominated albums, her third takes up a independent writing phase, following a more collaborative past. While private and soft-spoken, Laura is jovial, self assured and a real pleasure to meet in person. As the crew lock in camera angles and complete the usual sound checks, Laura begins to treat us to a medley of two songs from this latest release, in a setting often lyrically fitting. Perched on milk crate with a borrowed acoustic guitar in hand, Laura's poetic brilliance is a pleasure to listen to as she effortlessly performs Don't Ask Me Why and the John Steinbeck inspired Salinas. There's something altogether pure about the experience. Ignoring the ambient distractions (this time a plane bypass and delivery van beep), Laura holds the Sideshow Alley crew captivated as she gracefully meanders her way through a story of love and loss and calls to the heavens. Seemingly a very angelic moment indeed. ABOUT SIDESHOW ALLEY Sideshow Alley captures performing artists in the alleys, laneways and rooftops of Melbourne and New York City One song. One take. The Jezabels "Easy To Love" Live - Sideshow Alley

The Jezabels perform "Easy To Love" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv * Originally recorded in April, 2011 http://www.thejezabels.com ABOUT THE EPISODE The Jezabels are an Australian indie rock band originally from Byron Bay. We were pretty excited to get these guys on board. We’d seen the band perform before at the Hifi Bar in Melbourne. They’re a great live act so we knew it would translate perfectly in an intimate outdoor location. On this particular autumn evening, Hayley, Nik, Shannon and Sam were getting ready for their show nearby at the Corner Hotel. We picked up the band and walked them over to an alley in front of the Richmond train station. Leading the barrage of cameras our director Dominic Allen steered the ship. As is often the case we battled ambient noise from the nearby trains and passing sports cars, but our very capable sound man Jonathan Lee minimised the distractions. After a little of the usual band ribbing, everyone got in order and switched on. With some beautiful blue light backlighting the band, they performed a lovely version of their single “Easy To Love”. It looked and sounded really special. Another Sideshow in the can. Special thanks to our friend Stacey for helping make this one happen. x. To buy it now, click on https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/i-left-wolves-behind-that/id568958795?i=568958807&uo=4 ABOUT THE EPISODE The energy and visual splendour of their live performances were one of the original inspirations of the Sideshow Alley project. Their snappy dress sense and all around handsomeness screamed out for a permanent video record. This meant we had to do something special. Something different. Something that would be stupid to attempt with our no rehearsal policy. "Could we walk through the alley, while playing?" "Sure. Do you reckon you can get to this corner, by this point in the song?" "Guess so" "Then this corner by this point in the song?" "Of course" "Well then lets throw lots of cameras at it and see what happens..." It was cold, very cold. Those fingerless gloves aren't just to look cool. Don't let the sun flares fool you. But we were warmed by a strange electricity in the air. An electricity mostly generated by nervousness, as both band and crew were attempting something new. New and scary. We have a moving band, a road crossing, a barking dog (we threw beef jerky to him) and multiple locations that need synched audio. Not to mention preparing the extra surprise for the end of the song. None of us have much memory of the 5 minutes after "Action" was called. But it seemed to come out of the edit suite pretty great. Pretty damned great indeed. ABOUT THE TIGER AND ME The Tiger and Me create indie-pop music as seen through the looking glass of European folk songs. Three lead vocalists lead a troupe of multi-instrumentalists from gentle folk melodies through to riotous frenzied waltzes, with a wink and a nod to the old cabaret den and speakeasy tradition. Mark Seymour and The Undertow "Castlemaine" Live - Sideshow Alley

Mark Seymour and The Undertow performs "Castlemaine" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE Known for his story telling and banter, Mark Seymour takes us on a journey to Castlemaine. Located 120 kilometres from Melbourne, the gold rush town (population 6,797) in recent years has become an extension of Melbourne's artisan inner north, making it difficult to separate the checked shirts of Big W and Hard Yakka from the likes Ben Sherman and Savers. It's easy to imagine Mark as town sheriff and keeper of the community. Everyone's favourite bloke, you can picture the man sharing tales of years on road with the locals over a few frothies. Since his time fronting Hunters and Collectors in the 80's and 90's, one of the hardest working musicians in Australia regularly treads the boards around the country; his gutsy performances a thing of legend. Together with his band The Undertow (Cameron McKenzie, John Favaro and Pete Maslen), the team meet up in the seemingly fitting central Melbourne location of Heape Court; itself home of a Victorian Heritage listed gold rush era brick warehouse. As the band prepared to launch into the episode we were momentary interrupted by a guided tour of old folks all shuffling by to see the historic site (named in 1858 for pastoralist and merchant Benjamin Heape). With some handy picking work and a healthy dose of manly harmonising, Mark and co dive into a story of searching for comfort, happiness and escape. Sure makes us want to go to Castlemaine. Nicole Atkins "The Tower" Live - Sideshow Alley

Nicole Atkins performs "The Tower" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.nicoleatkins.com ABOUT THE EPISODE When we arrived at Huron street we were a bit confused, a guy dressed in full knight's armour shouting at the east river was being shot by a small camera crew right where we were planning to shoot Nicole Atkins. At first we thought he was part of Nicole's entourage, but then realised that Nicole wasn't there yet. We were hoping that he could stay, but he had some other castle to defend. "So many cameras I feel like we're in a firing squad". When Nicole arrived with her co-guitarist Irina Yalkowsky, they set up a Fender Vintage Deluxe Reverb Amp on a long lead to a little generator hooked to a car battery parked around the corner. It looked like a desperate attempt to keep someone on life support as the trucks of Brooklyn rolled past threatening to ruin all sense of sound on this shoot... then they started playing. The subtlety of this song was not lost on the industrial location and sat perfectly with the setting sun over manhattan in the background, Nicole and co squeezed out a sometimes subtle, sometimes smashing rendition of The Tower from her album Mondo Amore. We were glad that Sideshow Alley is a one take project as our fading light over the east river became an issue toward the end of this epic 6 minute song. Finishing in near darkness the lovely Nicole remarked... "I feel like we should be making a drug deal right here, or exchanging a body out of a trunk". Active Child "High Priestess" Live - Sideshow Alley

Active Child perform "High Priestess" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE Active Child is the working name of electronic music artist Pat Grossi. A cinematic layering of sound with an ethereal presence. Visiting Australia earlier this year in support of his album You Are All I See, the Sideshow Alley team gathered behind Atticus Finch off Cocoa Jackson Lane for a sonic treat. Having become acquainted with many of the lane ways of Melbourne, it's fun to discover an interesting backstory. Various sources suggest Cocoa Jackson was either named after a boxer who once lived in area, a cat or even a prostitute (given its proximity to nearby Pickwood Lodge). We like to keep the mystery. With up to 16 channels of instruments and digital laying required, our usual hidden microphones were thrown out the door. This was a production which warranted full playback and monitoring. While traditionally we don't hear the full impact of the performance until we're back in the studio, here we were enriched with a full performance complete with drum machine, synth samples and an angelic harp. Graveyard Train perform 'Tall Shadow' for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.graveyardtrain.com.au ABOUT THE EPISODE Ty and Sideshow Alley's south east Asian correspondent Mat 'Dode' Dodos, saw these guys play and knew they'd be perfect for a sideshow. Manly men, deep harmonies, and the toughest instrument in the world (you'll know it when you see it). They were rehearsing for their album launch in the backwoods of brunswick. We met them after practice and headed around the corner. Our largest band to date, with the most cameras and more challengingly, the most microphones and audio recorders. Umm why did we pick a location so close to a train line again? It's getting dark. Crap. But we gotta wait till the 5:02 Epping comes past. Those members of the sideshow crew rocking f4 lenses are struggling with exposure. Let's roll damnit. Well fix it in post. Gulp... YeeeHaaa. That was great. Bear's Den performs "Don't Let The Sun Steal You Away" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.bearsdenmusic.co.uk ABOUT THE EPISODE Bear's Den have become good friends in recent years after their appearance in previous episodes with The Staves and Nathaniel Rateliff in New York City. When the band travelled to Melbourne to play the Communion club night and support Matt Corby around the country, we just had make good on ensuring their very own episode. After spending the day on the coast showing these Brits how to ride the waves of Jan Juc, we journey back up the highway making our way to a Bourke St rooftop. Overlooking passing trams and the city mall below, the crew made our usual arrangements preparing to capture the beautiful jangling strings and rich harmonies. Following in the footsteps of other notable Communion success stories including Ben Howard, Michael Kiwanukua and Half Moon Run, Bear's Den have carved out the own well-worn path. With recent supports slots alongside Daughter and Mumford & Sons this band is now destined for greatness ahead. Without/Within is out now in Australia through Dew Process and Communion in UK/US. The Mourning Sons "Ramble" Live - Sideshow Alley

The Mourning Sons perform 'Ramble' for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.myspace.com/themourningsons ABOUT THE EPISODE Our first mid week shoot. Our first night shoot. Our first test of a new, improved and embiggened audio recording setup, that runs off car batteries and pureed vinyl. We were all set. Until the band got sick. We emailed, we made phone calls, we myspaced the crap out of our computers. So many bands had sick members or were out of town. Stupid winter. Finally, with only a few hours to go, we made contact with a new group of rock n rollers called The Mourning Sons. "We've never played accoustic before, but we'll give it a fuckin go". That's the Sideshow Alley spirit, a proper rock band. None of this folksy crap we'd been shooting up till now. An alley in Melbourne's Chinatown was the location. Behind the Exford Hotel, a notorious 24hr bottleshop. Perfect. The light was just right at the back of the Club X erotic shop. Also perfect. Our camera operators had beautiful, fast prime lenses. A wet ground too. Has grunge ever looked so good?...... That is it boys. One song, one take. Now let's get wasted. ABOUT THE MOURNING SONS The Mourning Sons are an exciting, new, no bullshit, good old fashioned rock'n'roll band that is a must see. The band was formed in 2008, and since then the boys have recorded their debut album - 'pipedreams', and played shows all over the country as well as regularly in their home town - Melbourne. Midlake perform 'Small Mountain' for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://midlake.net ABOUT THE EPISODE Midlake, yes Midlake. Internationally famous folk rockers. "Umm so how about just before sound check?" "Yes" "Great, see you then." Sideshow Alley is now excited. But wait. Just before sound check, on a Monday? That's like 3pm. Gulp. Most of the sideshow crew have day jobs...... But with a few long lunches, unscheduled ahhh "meetings" we had a crew. But only four cameras. And a very minimal lens choice. At least our new audio recording setup - as road tested with the Mourning Sons - is ready to deliver amazingness. A back stage meeting, a walk through the sunshine, then a quiet gathering in a St Kilda alley. With bass and percussion working on some technical issues back at the venue, we were treated to an amazing triple guitar + flute moment. Straight outta Texas. ABOUT MIDLAKE Every once in a while, a band comes along that undoubtedly evokes something special. Passenger "Golden Thread" Live - Sideshow Alley

Passenger performs "Golden Thread" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.facebook.com/PassengerOfficial ABOUT THE EPISODE We got in touch with Mike Rosenberg - aka Passenger - after a number of people recommended we record a session. We soon discovered this UK native spends a good deal of his time here in Australia having recently collaborated with a number of our nations finest on his 2010 release "Flight Of The Crow". After meeting Mike at the nearby train station we gathered with the crew in a lovely leafy suburban Northcote laneway. Timed beautifully with the evening fading behind the weathered picket fences, the light seemed fitting to the song choice of the day. While normally accompanied by Matt Corby on the album, the backing for this performance of Golden Thread was replaced by the neighbourhood dogs and birds, such is the reliability of the wildlife we've become accustomed. With Passenger regularly busking on street corners around the country, it's little wonder the honesty and intimacy evoked through the delicate finger picking and soothing tones seemed right at home in this environment. We'll take recommendations of this variety anytime. Splendid. Get along to one of his upcoming shows to see for yourself. Visit http://www.musicglue.com/passenger ABOUT PASSENGER The brainchild of 26-year-old Brighton born singer/songwriter Mike Rosenberg, Passenger is redefining the troubadour for the 21st century. Formerly a five-piece band, Passenger has now pared back to basics, quite literally bringing music to the streets on a series of lengthy busking journeys across Australia, America and the United Kingdom. A classic journeyman musician, cut from the same mould as Van Morrison, Neil Young and John Prine, Passenger has the unique ability to move from the humorous to heartbreaking with every song. Nathaniel Rateliff performs "Nothing To Show For" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THE EPISODE With the hustle of the Bowery below, in this second part on top of a beautiful rooftop location in Manhattan, we're treated to another amazing performance from the Communion Austin to Boston tour. If you've watched our earlier episode from The Staves you will notice some familiar faces here. Nathaniel Rateliff was the sole USA native joining the 3 other english acts on the road. A local folk hero in his hometown of Denver, Colorado, Nathaniel spent many years as a truck driver before taking to his true craft. When the tour rolled into NYC, Richie, Sammi and rest of the SSA crew were on hand to capture this performance. On cameo slate duties, Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons) set things into action. Playing a yet to be released track, this gentle bear who wears his heart on his sleeve, belted out a story from the soul. A quick pan around roof revealed just how easy it is to be drawn into his tender tunes. We've been lucky enough to be immersed into this man's music. We recommend you do the same. Pajama Club "Daylight" Live - Sideshow Alley

Pajama Club perform "Daylight" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE Who knew what to expect when one of Australia's (well, maybe New Zealand's) greatest song writers teamed up with his wife to form a new dub/disco/funk group "Pajama Club"? Supposedly named because during their early jam sessions at home they were only wearing pajamas. We'd listened to what little we could find of their music online, but still, this was Neil Finn whose music we'd loved for years and it forms certain expectations. We were fortunate that the group could spare some time after sound check to join us in a back alley of St Kilda, a suburb with a long and infamous history of great live music. What an honour to meet Neil, and the rest of the band too, who're all great musicians and had proved their chops in other bands. As we were preparing to shoot a small crowd started to gather. A chap came out of a gate that backed onto the alley and exclaimed "Oh wow, are you......" We were of course waiting for him to say "Neil Finn?", but no, his question was "... are you guys Sideshow Alley?". No way, only in St Kilda. How flattering though, but also how embarrassing, does he realise who we're filming? But more audience is good, and he owned a very friendly dog named Jack who was very curious about all instruments and camera equipment. Out of the way Jack, we're ready to roll. The song started so simply, but once the synth kicked in we knew we were in for a very different Neil Finn. The big harmonies arrived and it was just so happy and fun. Maybe a little too fun for Jack who could not resist being part of it. This is the magic of a one take live performance, but please don't chew through a cable. A brief canine cameo and a great performance. Thank you Pajama Club. Widowspeak "In The Pines" Live - Sideshow Alley

Widowspeak perform "In The Pines" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE On a gorgeous night in New York City we made our way up to the rooftop where we were to meet Widowspeak and began getting set up. The light was perfect, the cameras in place, the mics were ready to attach, but there was no band. As we watched the orange glow from the summer's sun began to intensify behind the buildings we began looking around and heard murmers from within the elevator shaft. Widowspeak were trapped. After finding a way out and getting all set up they kicked into a beautiful and intimite rendition of 'In The Pines' from their namesake album 'Widowspeak'. The sunset glistened and it was almost hard to watch the band as the backdrop perfectly silhouetted them on the roof. 'In The Pines' fluttered across the roof with the beat of the drum, the intricate guitars and Molly's soft vocals. One song, one take. While we were packing up the gear we turned to see the band giving another one take performance specifically for one of our shooters. Patrick was being serenaded by the band with no cameras rolling before everyone dispersed on a genuinely magical night. Big Scary "Satisfy Me" Live - Sideshow Alley

Big Scary perform "Satisfy Me" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://bigscary.net ABOUT THE EPISODE It was the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday when we met Tom and Jo. We'd chosen an alley behind The Toff in Town, right in the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown, as they were performing there that night and were waiting to do soundcheck. We couldn't resist asking if they might like to perform while sitting on top of one of the large rubbish bins that filled the alley. We realised it was meant to be when Tom's socks blended so perfectly. Up you get then. We had the most on-lookers and the most traffic noise of any Sideshow to date. Yet Big Scary managed to carve out a lovely moment of serenity with a beautiful and personal rendition of "Satisfy Me". ABOUT BIG SCARY Tom was a strummer. Jo was a drummer. Tom and Jo jammed in Jo's living room. Tom and Jo had fun and they thought their music was alright. Tom and Jo recorded a few songs, and decided they should be a band called Big Scary, even though it's not very big, or scary. Departing from our usual coverage of the live music scene we captured this sexy new piece from young Melbourne-based choreographer Alice Topp. Breathing life and energy into the simple flesh-coloured garments, Vivenne Wong and Calvin Hannaford performed "Trace" within the narrow space of Guildford Lane, accompanied by the beautiful warm tones of classical guitarist Tiago Brissos. Highlighted by Utopian Slumps against the backdrop of the Guildford Lane Gallery, and looked over by curious passersby, this latest episode eloquently highlights the fusion between cinema and performing art that is our goal. Lisa Hannigan "Knots" Live - Sideshow Alley

Lisa Hannigan performs "Knots" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE A few years ago we stumbled upon a video of a singer and her band playing a beautiful little song all tucked closely together into a tiny pub booth. Glasses clinking and children running around in the background, the intimate and raw nature of the situation was something typically Irish. Relaxed and honest, it drew you into the environment in a way that felt like you too were part of the family, there enjoying your lazy ale. The video left a lasting impression and along with another Irish masterpiece "Once", was an early influence for Sideshow Alley. The adorable performer in this clip was Lisa Hannigan. A soulful and husky yet delicate songstress who now has two delightful records released. While here in Melbourne playing a tribute concert for the late Nick Drake, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet the affable Lisa and attempt to recapture her much loved charm. With ukulele in hand, we met up opposite the National Gallery of Victoria, within the Royal Botanical Gardens. Feeling immediately at ease and filled with cheeky conversation, we bantered over the severe lack of turtles in the Melbourne garden waters and of her experience filming the official video for "Knots" (directed by Myles O'Reilly) in which she sacrificed a frock weathering the force of several paint filled super soakers. Armed with only cameras and microphones, albeit well equipped coverage, the crew were all treated to an effortless stripped back rendition. Under the canopy of the trees with the occasional pond pest and the iconic Melbourne trams travelling down St Kilda road in the distance, we too were swept up in the loveliness of this Irish lass. If you're not familiar with Lisa's work, we thoroughly recommend catching up on her two album releases "Sea Sew" and "Passenger", along with many of her other brilliant music videos. You'll be better off for doing so. ABOUT SIDESHOW ALLEY Sideshow Alley captures performing artists in the alleys, laneways and rooftops of Melbourne and New York City One song. One take. Little John "Ain't Ever Gonna Leave You" Live - Sideshow Alley

Little John performs "Ain't Ever Gonna Leave You" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://putyourhandsonme.com ABOUT THIS EPISODE Little John was introduced to us by a good friend of Sideshow Alley, who grew up across the road from lead singer John Dickson. As with most sessions, we'd scouted the location earlier and were happy with the idyllic and seemingly quiet Fitzroy laneway. However, when we turned up on the day, an unexpected event proved much more appropriate to our impromptu ethos. Perhaps their flyer should have read "Fitzroy Garage Sale with live band"; only the generous operators of this summer tradition didn't plan to have the purveyors of country gospel nestled on the porch and adjacent lane between their various clothes and wares. After meeting the band rehearsing nearby at John's house, we wandered over to peruse the bargains on sale. Along with John and his stirringly unique voice, the band was completed by Brooke Penrose (double bass), Damian Hooper (acoustic guitar), Bill Deeble (drums), and Greg Field (fiddle). Settled within a yard full of abandoned souvenirs, the lads gifted us (and the lucky bargain-hunters) with the opening track from their recent release "Put Your Hands On Me". We like to think that value for the items on display skyrocketed following the performance, and folk presumably flocked to purchase anything that had been serenaded. This remains unconfirmed. The local Marquis of Lorne, on the other hand, did experience a inexplicable boom in sales post session... Here's hoping Little John will continue forth, appearing uninvited at garage sales across this wide land. In the meantime, you can see them appear in more traditional spaces. Get your suit fixed up quick slick and catch them performing live around Melbourne. ABOUT LITTLE JOHN "Every now and then a band emerges from seemingly nowhere to release a debut album that captures your attention and causes the hairs on your arms to stand up instantaneously. Little John are such a band with their release Put Your Hands On Me. The Melbourne based five-piece are purveyors of country gospel and folk-rock. The band is the brain child of singer/songwriter & harmonica player from Redfish Bluegrass, John Dickson. Formed in 2009, Little John also comprises Brooke Penrose (double bass/backing vox), Damian Hooper (electric guitar), Bill Deeble (drums/backing vox), and Greg Field (mandolin/fiddle/backing vox). Fitz and The Tantrums perform "MoneyGrabber" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv ABOUT THIS EPISODE Having previously graced the stage on Jimmy Kimmel, Conan and The Tonight Show, we knew we'd be set for a good show when Los Angeles based soul indie-pop band Fitz and The Tantrums dropped by an alleyway in South Melbourne. Dashing out on our lunch break to hang with these super cool cats, we brought along some friends from nearby local offices to build a crowd and good vibes. When there's a saxophone that sizeable on hand, you know you're in for some funky beats. Lead singers Michael Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs brought about the energetic good times with John Wicks (drums), Jeremy Ruzumna (keys), Joseph Karmes (bass) and James King locking down the groove. It's always a shame to wrap so swiftly on these episodes. We built the party and as quickly as we rolled in, it's all done and we go our separate ways. Of course we could tell you South Melbourne then turned into a monster jam block party. Maybe that happened. Ainslie Wills performs "Drive" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.ainsliewills.com ABOUT THE EPISODE It's been some time since the team have been out recording on the streets. Over the past year we switched focus toward our first feature film music documentary Austin to Boston. Having released that to the world it is with great pleasure we get back onto the cobbles and record more fantastic artists. Ainslie Wills is without doubt one of Australia's strongest new artists. She has been on our radar since we first started. Her debut album “You Go Your Way, I'll Go Mine" was one of our favourite records of the year and remains an album with which we regularly return. Her latest EP "Oh The Gold" produced again with regular musical collaborator Lawrence Folvig displays the same beautiful layered quality. Opening with first single "Drive" it's another gem which grows with each listen. Gathering in the leafy neighbourhood of Parkville with Ainslie and Lawrence it’s a great privilege to again hear such talent in an intimate setting. One of the nicest things about Sideshow Alley is our relaxed approach to the shoot production. It may have been a while since our previous one, but it's the ease of structure that makes it so enjoyable to band together again and seamlessly lock back in. Here’s hoping it’s not too long before we’re out there again. Gareth Liddiard performs "Did She Scare All Of Your Friends Away" live for http://www.sideshowalley.tv http://www.garethliddiard.com ABOUT THE EPISODE We like this guy. While many folks may be familiar with the growling frontman of The Drones, Gareth Liddiard is refreshingly humble in person. Playing a circuit of dates in support of his solo album "Strange Tourist," we meet the storyteller before his Melbourne show at the East Brunswick Club. As is often the case, we had scouted many possible locations near the venue. Unlike evening episodes in the illuminated city laneways, shooting at night in residential Brunswick presented some intriguing challenges... With the time confirmed, and any well-lit locations eliminated, Ty made an inspired dash to the camping store to pick up a portable fireplace. Add some extra lanterns in the overhanging branches and our light was well and truly sourced. While the energy of a live Drones show may leave you gasping for air, it's nice to take a breather, pull up a chair and sit down by the fire for an intimate tale. Perched on a temporarily relocated park bench, Gareth enthralled us with the saga of Anna and her exploits. Anyone familiar with the songwriter knows you're in for the lyrical long haul.
