I Know It Was The Blood - The Pilgrim Jubilee Singers, "Church Songs"

The Pilgrim Jubilee Singers - Church Songs DVD Release Date: Dec 13, 2005 Several years ago MALACO started what is called – 601 Music series. Essentially, MALACO would take the best recordings from a particular artist in their camp and issue a compilation CD. For fans of gospel quartet music, the acquisition of these CD’s was the best way to have in your collection some of the recordings of your favorite gospel singer, without having to purchase different recordings. MALACO has done the same thing with videos from artists in their camp. One of the video is The Pilgrim Jubilees’ Church Songs. This 601 Music video was released on December 23, 2005. So this month we review The Pilgrim Jubilees’ Church Songs. There are 10 clips on this video. The songs on the video are “Bless Your House,” “Church Song,” “Life Evening Sun,” “Too Close’” “Safety of Your Soul,” “God’s Been Good To Me,” “My Christian Journey,” "I Know It Was The Blood,” “No Grave Can Hold Me Down,” and “I Love You.” The video takes you from The Pilgrim Jubilees’ Live From Jackson, Mississippi, which was released in 1990, to Live in Birmingham and A Night to Remember. You will also find a clip from the video Together As One 150 Years. The project is vintage Jubes. One disappointment is that the song “Church Song” is the short version. Don’t look for any surprises from the Jubes. Clearly, MALACO decided to be safe and just take the various video clips just as they are and package it as Church Songs. You will see Bo Bo Harris, of The Fantastic Violinaries on drum on the “Bless Your House” and “I Love You” clips. Also, the Late Roger Bryant, of The Jackson Southernaires, joins the Jubes on “My Christian Journey.” If you are looking for a good video that captures the essence of The Pilgrim Jubilees, then you will want to add this video to your collection. Unfortunately, you will not find any interviews of his video. You will not find any credits at the end of the video. You will not find any written information about the performances on the video. What you will find is 52 minutes and 45 seconds of good old fashion gospel quartet music that is appealing to both the ears and eyes. Track Listing: 1. Bless Your House 2. Church Song 3. Life's Evening Sun 4. Too Close 5. Safety Of Your Soul 6. God's Been Good To Me 7. My Christian Journey 8. I Know It Was The Blood 9. No Grave Can Hold Me Down 10. Battle Songs - Pilgrim Jubilees,"The Year Of Jubilee"

Pilgrim Jubilees - The Year Of Jubilee DVD Release Date: December 16, 2003 Since the early '50s, the Pilgrim Jubilee Singers have used their hard, rockin' gospel music as a powerful means of testifying their faith, love, and charitable hope that humanity will find a way to bring itself closer to the kingdom of heaven. Over its long history, the group has undergone numerous personnel changes. The first incarnation originated in the 1940s on the Mississippi Delta by Elgie and Theopholis Graham, but the most famous version of the Pilgrim Jubilees began in Chicago, 1952, when younger Graham brothers Clay and Cleve resurrected the group. Since then, these two have remained the group's spiritual and musical core. While growing up in Mississippi, all four Graham brothers were trained to sing. It was Theopholis who left the first group to live in Chicago; the rest of his brothers followed in 1951, and all four briefly sang in the group. the Pilgrim Jubilees toured quite a bit (when not working their day jobs, which for the Graham brothers meant working in their separate barber shops), and this proved too much for the older brothers, who gradually dropped out. Shortly thereafter, Clay and Cleve invited baritone Major Roberson and lead singer Percy Clark (both from Mississippi) to join. They also took on guitarist Richard Crume and bassist Roosevelt English, and began recording; through the 1950s, they released sides and albums for assorted labels, including Peacock, Chance, and Nashboro. Soon after signing to Peacock in 1960, the band gained national exposure with their label debut, "Stretch Out." Its success allowed the Pilgrim Jubilees to finally go professional. Crume eventually left the group to join the Soul Stirrers, but the other three have remained together and carried on into the '90s. Track Listing: 1. Hand In Hand 2. Yes Lord 3. After The Storm 4. The Pilgrim Jubilees are known affectionaltely as "The Jubes" througout the country. They are also known for their gospel music with its driving beat. The group traces its beginning back to 1934, in Houston, Mississippi, when Elgie Graham and Willie Johnson decided to form a duet. In 1946, Theophilles Graham, Monroe Hatchett, and Leonard Brownlee were added, and The Pilgrim Jubilees were formed. These members remained intact until 1950, when the Graham family moved to Chicago, Illinois. In the early fifties the group was reorganized buy Elgie Graham. He brought in Major Roberson, Kenneth Madden and his brothers, Cleve and Clay Graham. In 1955 Elgie decided to retire from the group, but encouraged them to continue singing God's praises. Other than the departure of Kenneth Madden, and the arrival of Ben Chandler, the group presently remains intact. They released their first recording on the Nashboro Record label, and received a fair amount of recognition. After many prayers and meditations, Major Roberson and Rufus Crume composed "Stretch Out". While singing on a program in Atlanta, Georgia, they were noticed by Dave Clark, who was at Peacock-Songbird Records at the time. He recommended that Peacock sign them, and with the release of "Stretch Out", the group received national recognition, as well as a Gold Record. In 1979 "The Jubes", signed with Savoy Records. During their stay, they recorded four albums entitled, "Keep on Climbing", "Put On Your Shoes", "Whensoever I Pray", and "Put Your Trust In Jesus". It was during this time that they established themselves as one of gospel's top quartets. From these albums came such hits as "Rich Man, Poor Man", "I'm Happy With Jesus Alone", "Whensoever I Pray", "Put Your Trust In Jesus", "I'm Glad You Looked My Way", and many others. In 1987 they signed with Malaco Records and released "Gospel Roots", which immediately hit the Billboard Top Forty Gospel Chart. 1988 brought the release of their second Malaco project entitled "Back to Basics". It reached the top twenty-five on Billboard. "Family affair", released in 1991, reached the top twenty on Billboard and Cashbox and was nominated for a Stellar Award. 'I'm Getting Better All the Time" released in late 1992, has enjoyed extensive airplay nationally and is proving to be a favorite of gospel music lovers everywhere. According to Pastor Naomi Durant of Baltimore Maryland, when you listen to The Jubes, you will understand endurance. For these men are legends in their own time. They have withstood the test of time. Duration: 5:33 - FileType: mp3 - Bitrate: 192 Kbps

I Love You Vinyl LP - The Pilgrim Jubilees, "Trouble In The Street"

The Pilgrim Jubilees, "Trouble In The Street" Release date: September 9, 1997 The Pilgrim Jubilees were among the early pioneers of the quartet vocal sound in the '50s, and they weren't about to move away from the old-time sound at this late stage in the game on Trouble in the Street. The songs (save one) are all group member originals, and the arrangements stick to the classic format -- piano/organ and bass dominate, guitar for rhythm and backbeat drums -- with a bit of atmospheric synthesizer the lone concession to contemporary tastes. The opening "Trouble in the Street" throws in a modified "Turning Point" bassline with emphasis on choral harmonies, and more piano and impassioned singing surface on "My Christian Journey." "I Love You" gets cloying with its synth wash blankets, but "I Do Too" gets some momentum going, albeit pretty sedately. "Heavenly Reunion" and "Hold Me Together" return to their usual mid-tempo groove, the latter with massed backing vocals backing lead exhortations before "Love Everybody" gets a good head of "Hi-Heeled Sneakers" steam going. "You've Got to Wait" begins to step out in bring-it-on-home fashion -- Major Robertson seems to be the Jubilees' best up-tempo songwriter, as the country jog trot blues of "The Train" showed earlier. "By and By" is just piano and more impassioned vocals, but while Trouble in the Street is solid enough, none of the songs really leap out to grab you. You already can guess the message, so ultimately it's another competent disc by these seasoned veterans but not the best place to start for a group as historically important as the Pilgrim Jubilees. Fellowship - The Pilgrim Jubilees, "Were You There?"

The Pilgrim Jubilees, "Were You There" Release Date: 24 August 2000 The Pilgrim Jubilees celebrated 47 years for singing with the group's 1997 multi-Stellar-nominated album " Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around". Members of the legendary gospel harmony quartet have every reason to rest on their laurels. But they say the Lord did the hiring...and He'll have to do the retiring. Delivering gospel music with a driving beat, The Jubes have released seven hit albums on Malaco Records, which became their musical home a dozen years ago. The group's beginning was in 1934, in Houston, Mississippi, when Elgie Graham and Willie Johnson formed a gospel duet. A dozen years later, in 1946, the group added new members (brother) Theophilles Graham, Monroe Hatchett and Leonard Brownlee- and the early Pilgrim Jubilees were born. This group flourished until about 1950, when the Grahams moved away to Chicago. But Elgie Graham soon revived and reorganized the group, signing on Major Roberson, Kenneth Madden and his brothers, Cleve and Clay Graham, as members. In 1955 Elgie retired from the group, but he encouraged the other members to continue singing God's praises. Other than the 1960s departure of Kenneth Madden, and the 1970 arrival of Ben Chandler, the core group remains the same now. In addition to the four core vocalists - Major, Cleve, Clay and Ben- the Pilgrim Jubilees today include musicians' bobby McDougal (a member since the late 1960's), Michael Atkins (since the early '70s), cousin Eddie Graham (since the early 1990's) and Fred Rice (since 1995). The early Jubes released their first recording in 1952 on the Nashboro label, receiving a fair amount of recognition. After many prayers and meditations, Major Roberson and Rufus Crume composed the gospel song Stretch Out. While singing on a program in the late 1950s in Atlanta, Ga., The Jubes were noticed by Dave Clark, who represented Peacock-Songbird Records. Clark persuaded Peacock to sign them and, with the release of Stretch Out, the group received national recognition-as well as a gold record! In 1979, The Jubes signed on with gospel's venerable Savoy Records. During that era, the group recorded four albums, Keep on Climbing, Put on Your Shoes, Whensoever I Pray and Put Your Trust In Jesus. The Jubes soon became one of gospel's top quartets. From these albums came such hit songs as Rich Man, Poor Man; I'm Happy With Jesus Alone; Whensoever I Pray; Put Your Trust In Jesus; and I'm Glad You Looked My Way. In 1987, the group signed with Malaco in 1991 and released Gospel Roots, which immediately hit the Top 40 of Billboard magazine's Gospel Albums Chart. Their second Malaco project, 1988's Back to Basics, reached the top 25 on Billboard's chart. Family Affair, released on Malaco in 1991, hit the top 20 in both on Billboard and Cashbox and was nominated for gospel's coveted Stellar Award. I'm Getting Better All the Time earned extensive nationwide airplay in 1991 and became a favorite of gospel fans. In 1994, The Jubes released In Revival, a greatest hits album which was recorded live in their hometown of Houston, Mississippi. The charted disc became one of the top-selling gospel albums of any era. The Jubes have performed in concert on the world's greatest stages, from Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center to New York's Apollo Theatre and from The Astrodome in Texas to Disneyland in California. They are a regular at major music festivals, from the Bahamas to New Orleans' Jazz & Heritage Festival. DISCLAIMER: NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED.
